HAPPY BIRTHDAY GENDER ASSOCIATIONS: REFLECTING ON FIVE YEARS OF IMPACT

In October 2024, Gender Associations turned five! We took this opportunity to celebrate and reflect on our achievements.

In the past five years, we have contributed to promoting gender-responsive peace and security in 32 countries, covering the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia. We have worked with major international organisations, such as the UN, NATO, EU and others, with State institutions and with civil society organisations. Reflecting on some of the key achievements of our work, we have:

Shaped global, regional and national policies and Action Plans on Women, Peace and Security for the UN, NATO and governments, including Canada, Germany, Switzerland and the UK

Supported countries to incorporate equality principles into foreign policy and development cooperation

Trained policymakers, peacekeepers, diplomats and regional actors from around the world to ensure gender-responsive peace and security

Conducted gender-responsive conflict analyses from Ukraine to Trinidad and Tobago

Provided expert advice to leading women’s rights and peacebuilding organisations for more effectiveness and resource mobilisation

Identified resilience strategies for women’s organisations in Latin America

Conducted evaluations and project development for networks and alliances of women, such as the African Women Leaders Network

Provided leadership trainings to women deploying to UN peacekeeping missions

Provided trainings on the prevention of and response to sexual harassment in law enforcement of Moldova and Ukraine

Today, we are operating in times of global insecurities. From escalating conflicts to political and democratic regressions, the principles and rights we uphold are facing new pressures. And yet, the need for inclusive and sustainable solutions to peace and security is more urgent than ever.

In a world where gender equality is not easily valued in economic terms, we are both proud and humbled by how far we have come. Our work would not be possible without the dedication and expertise of our team. We are deeply grateful to our Lead Associates, who bring their decades-long technical, thematic and regional expertise to our work, as well as to our global roster of almost 500 experts from around the world.

As we look ahead on our birthday, we remain committed to staying sharp, agile and unapologetically vocal in advancing our mission. For the years to come, we are excited to continue leading and supporting transformative work in peace and security.
